How to Choose the Best ASME Tank Repair Services

How can I choose the best ASME tank repair services? Look for a service that:

  • Will come to you, if needed.
  • Has experience with a variety of ASME tanks.
  • Holds a National Board Certificate.

Stuff happens.

Even the most well-built tanks will likely need a repair at some point.

The important thing is to get things fixed quickly so production doesn’t lag and you don’t lose time and money.

Always on-call for your ASME tank repair services

When your ASME tank manufacturer works closely with you during the creation phase, they are ideal for taking on your repairs.

At Tank Fab, we know our tanks well enough to make on-demand repairs where needed.

We have a certified, professional team that can handle all tank repairs from all individuals or companies.

Within the United States, all ASME Code tank repairs and alteration must be made in accordance with the National Board Code. The company making the tank repairs or alterations must be certified by the National Board to perform this work.

Keep in mind that not all ASME tank repair services are created equal.

Although they may be certified by the National Board, they may not be certified to make the specific repair you need. Depending on how the Company’s Quality Control program is certified by the National Board, they may be able to:

  • Make tank repairs in the shop only. This means that the tank needing repair must be shipped to their location for repair. This is usually not an ideal option.
  • Make tank repairs and alterations in the shop only. Depending on the type of repair, the National Board Code may consider it an alteration instead of a repair. The company must be certified by the National Board to do both repairs and alterations to code tanks. Some examples of tank alteration are given below.
  • Make tank repairs in the shop and field. In this case, the company can repair your tank either at their location or yours, but they can not alter the tank.
  • Make tank repairs and alterations in the shop and field. This is what Tank Fab is certified by the National Board to do.

Alteration or repair? How to tell

Here are some examples of how the National Board Code will dictate whether the ASME tank should be repaired or altered.

Increased production demands

Let’s say you have an ASME Code tank with a 4” nozzle in the shell of the tank. Your company needs to increase its production due to customer demands.

In order to do this, you need to replace the 4” nozzle with a 6” nozzle to meet production output.

In this case, the National Board’s Code considers this a tank alteration. The company performing this must be certified to make tank alterations in the field.

They must also be certified to make the necessary ASME Code Tank calculations to increase the size of the nozzle for 4” to 6” in size.

Increase a tank’s useable life.

Your existing tank has a carbon steel nozzle that has corroded away prematurely. You know from your facility’s experience that if you could replace this carbon steel nozzle with one made of stainless steel, you could increase the tank’s useful life by 30%.

Depending on the type of stainless steel you want to use, the National Board Code would consider this either a tank repair or alteration.

The company performing this work would need to be certified to perform repairs and alterations in the field.

It’s important that you work with someone who can either repair or alter your tank in the field.

Doing so allows for the repair to be done quickly to avoid as much downtime as possible.

Asking the right questions

How can you tell if a company is qualified for what kind of work?

Ask them for a copy of their current National Board Certificate.

The certificate defines what dates the company is qualified to work for and what type of work they are qualified to do. Here’s a copy of our current certificate.
