By 1880, there had been enough injuries – both non-fatal and fatal – that the ASME Code is necessary.
The organization is still going strong today with approximately 140,000 members around the world.
Most states in the U.S. require that tank manufacturers use the ASME Code – both in design and manufacture of tanks that have an internal pressure of 15 PSI or more – when building pressure vessels that will be used within their jurisdictions.
Any kind of tank that holds a pressurized liquid or gas would fall under these required guidelines.
There are more stringent rules in place for tanks that contain dangerous and/or deadly substances.
In these situations, x-ray and post-weld heat treatments are also part of the ASME requirements.

Every year, we undergo a review by an ASME-certified third-party inspection agency to make sure we’re maintaining the standards.
Once every third year, we go through an audit by ASME and National Board auditors.

It’s crucial that your ASME code tanks and other vessels are inspected on a regular basis for damage or wear that could make them fall outside of ASME standards – or put people at risk for injury.
The tank’s heads, shell, and welds all need to be checked for corrosion.
Most states require that vessels and tanks be registered and given the once-over by a certified technician, annually. You can contact your state to verify if this is a requirement here.

The National Board requires any repairs or alterations be done by a certified company that follows ASME standards.
